Celebrating Adolescents in the Month of May
Focused on best practices for healthy youth development, The HYD-PRC is celebrating National Adolescent Health Month™ and Sexual Health for All Month. “Our center celebrates adolescent and young adults year round, but May helps to shine a broader light on adolescents and adolescent health along with bringing extra attention to sexuality education,” said Rebecca Shlafer, HYD-PRC Center Director. Read on for more information about National Adolescent Health Month and Sed Ed for All Month. Both campaigns also provide social media toolkits that provide you with language and graphics that you too can share to support adolescents all month long!
National Adolescent Health Month™
National Adolescent Health Month™ (NAHM) is a national and statewide initiative that supports partnerships between families and their communities to recognize and elevate young people’s strengths and potential. Investing in adolescent health and well-being today promotes health for young people now and into their adult lives, as well as better health for the next generation. NAHM’s theme this year is Take Action for Adolescents, to ensure that all adolescents in the United States have the safety, support, and resources to thrive, be healthy, and realize their full potential.

Sex Ed For All Month
The overwhelming majority of Americans want young people to get sex education—including parents and young people themselves. The vast majority of Republicans and Democrats agree that sex education covering a wide range of topics is important to teach in middle and high school. Nationally, 96% of parents support having sex education in high school. In Minnesota, 90% of parents do. Sex education that includes LGBTQ+ identities has been shown to reduce bullying, discrimination, and harassment, meaning schools are safer for all youth. Additionally, school programs reinforce the role of family communication about sex and relationships, supporting young people in talking with their parents/caregivers.
Each May, Sex Ed for All Month – powered by the national Sex Ed Coalition –brings together advocates voicing our shared commitment to a world where all young people get equitable access to great sex ed.
